Course Description and Prerequisites:

The XML and XHTML Certificate Program provides a broad introduction to both XML (Extensible Markup Language) and XHTML with relevant knowledge necessary to design proficiently in this extremely extensible markup language and its W3C-standardized infrastructure language.

XML and XHTML is suitable for students with a wide range of computer skills. This course utilizes numerous exercise sets and lab practicums. Upon completion of the course, participants will have gained the necessary experience needed to use XML and XHTML proficiently for today's weblication development. Each student will design and implement an entire XML/XHTML project from start to finish. The acquired skills and supporting knowledge base that the student has obtained during the course interval are utilized in developing this project.

Course Objectives:
  • Understand XML core concepts and syntax.
  • Create links inside and between documents utilizing Xlink and XPointer.
  • Model documents to be compliant with DTDs and XML schema.
  • Make the transition to XHTML, the next generation Web markup language.

  • Students should have fundamental PC/workstation skills, including text editing and Web Browsing experience. Knowledge of a scripting language such as Perl, JavaScript, or Visual Basic would be advantageous, but not required. This course is not intended to introduce XML as the student's first markup language, and therefore some HTML knowledge is recommended.

    Module Overviews:

Module 1: XML Fundamentals In this module, the student is introduced to the XML markup language and associated modeling techniques required to develop leading edge Web documentation for a next generation Web site. The student learns to design structured and intuitive markup utilizing schema and stylesheets which flexibly augment the underlying XML infrastructure.

Module 2: Applying XML and XHTML Here the student advances from XML's basic syntax to the necessary skill set required to begin understanding as well as scripting XML applications. The principles of the language are reinforced by analysis of business case studies including an XML-based Web site. An overview of some of the more advanced XML features are presented to entice further study.
