Internet Technologies and Web Design
Certificate Program
Course Description and Prerequisites:
The Internet Technologies and Web Design Program is designed for
people with little or no Internet experience. The course surveys the basics of Internet technology
and gives you the knowledge to tap into the power and excitement of online communication via
the Internet and the World Wide Web. The course is taught in a hands-on environment where
students will learn how to connect to the Internet and navigate the World Wide Web, the basics
of HTML and web page authoring, how to design and manage a web site and the fundamentals of
web programming using PERL.
Students must have some previous programming experience to enroll in this class. Introduction
to UNIX and Perl Scripting,
offered by the Information Technology Certificate Programs, is a good base.
Module Overviews:
Module 1: Introduction to
the Internet
This module will cover how the Internet is organized,
addressing, routing, DNS, and the use of Internet applications. It covers all basic and advanced
applications including electronic mail, advanced Web and FTP searches, and legal issues
associated with the Internet. Laboratories will include extensive hands-on experience with all
aspects of using the Internet. This is a core course in the Internet Graduate Certificate
curriculum.
Module 2: HTML
and Web Pages Authoring
This course covers basic through advanced Web page
authoring techniques using both HTML and WYSIWYG authoring software. HTML 4.0 will
be taught including the use of Cascading Style Sheets and Dynamic HTML. Students will learn
the optimal use of keywords and search engine positioning. In the lab, students will study, create
and refine Web pages online, as well as learning how to create basic Web graphics.
Module 3: Web
Site Design and Management
This course addresses the design of effective Web
site including page layout, user interface design, graphic design, content flow and site
structure; management of Web site resources including security and intranet management and
design considerations. The use of design standards and templates teach students to
maximize site consistency. Students will design and create a major Web site with multiple pages
and cross-linked structures.
Module 4: Fundamentals
of Web Programming
This course introduces programming the Common
Gateway Interface for World Wide Web pages using Perl. Perl is a high-level programming
language that is also an interpreted language, which allows programs to be written and tested
without an intermediate compilation step, allowing ease of experimentation as well as rapid and
easy testing and debugging. The emphasis is on fundamentals of programming and creation of
interfaces to handle HTML form data. In the lab, students will create basic Perl programs with
Web interfaces, learn to adapt existing Perl code, and process data flows from online forms with
basic database structures.
