UNIX Systems & Networking - Sun Solaris Curriculum
Certificate Program

Course Description and Prerequisites:

This Unix course will utilize Sun's curriculum to give students comprehensive hands-on training and prepare them for Sun's Certification Exams. The Program is divided into individual micro-courses called modules that cover a specific area of coursework in Unix. A comprehensive exam will be administered at the end of each module.

A good grasp of any operating system, including DOS/Windows and knowledge of file and directory concepts is necessary for enrollment.

Module Overviews:

Module 1: Fundamentals of Unix (Sun Course SA-118)
This module covers the core fundamentals of the Unix operating system including fundamental command line, file permissions, and basic network concepts. Students will learn skills that include: composing command-line strings, navigating the Solaris environment file system, manipulating text files, and creating files and directories.

Module 2: Shell Programming (Sun Courses SA-120 and SA-245)
This Shell course provides students with the knowledge to read, write, and debug shell scripts. Students will be taught how to develop simple scripts to automate frequently executed sequences of commands, and how to use conditional logic, user interaction, loops, functions and start-up scripts to enhance the productivity and effectiveness of the user and the system administrator. This unit covers the C, the Bourne and the Korn shell scripting languages with emphasis on the Korn shell.

Module 3: System Administration I and II (Sun Courses SA-238 and SA-288)
The system administration module will prepare students for the System Administration Certification Exams 310-009 and 310-010. Although the course will emphasize the Solaris operating system, a comparison will be made between Solaris and other Unix operating systems such as Linux, HP-UX, FreeBSD and IRIX (sgi). Instructional topics include: the essential tasks of standalone installation, file system management, backup procedures, process control, user administration, device management, configure and troubleshoot the NFS, configure the Network Information System (NIS) environment, disk management, RBAC Role-Based Access Control, and JumpStart.

Module 4: Unix Network Administration
This module provides hands-on experience with network configuration and troubleshooting, as well as Internet Protocol (IP) routing, Domain Name Service (DNS), Apache web server, ssh, and time server. Upon completion of this module students will have learned to understand ISO/OSI and TCP/IP layers, describe major TCP/IP protocols, configure routing and routing tables, add Internet and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) services, setup and configure DNS server, apache web server, and ssh.
