Course Description and Prerequisites:

This course aims to provide students with a solid foundation in information technology management concepts and related business strategies. It will provide students with historical context and current state for IT-related design, infrastructure, economic and human resource issues. It will also take students through the risks and challenges that face managers of information technology and provide frameworks for effective planning and decision making for both near-term operational and longer-term strategic situations.

An admission interview with a program manager is required for enrollment.

Participants successfully completing this program will be able to:
  • Effectively discuss the evolution from an industrial to an information-based, networked economy.
  • Describe using appropriate terminology the current state of information technology's role in business strategy.
  • Analyze IT strategies in terms of design, cost-benefit and human resource considerations.
  • Assess the opportunities and risk exposure of an organization's IT environment.
  • Discuss the potential opportunities afforded by technology infrastructures, including opening, evolving and expanding product channels, improving communication, improving customer service, and reducing cycle times.
  • Discuss the opportunities and risks associated with managing technology infrastructures, including security, performance, reliability, and availability issues.
  • Apply frameworks for effective planning and decision making regarding IT management.
  • Describe the human resource, financial, and operational responsibilities of an IT manager, including the unique challenges associated with outsourcing, off-shoring, and globalization.
  • Discuss the impact of quality management and process maturity on the management of an IT environment.
  • Discuss the roles of portfolio and project management in managing an IT environment.
