Solaris and Linux Administration

Course Description and Prerequisites:

In this hands-on course, students learn about the Solaris and Linux operating systems, how to program in shell scripts, and basic Solaris and Linux administration.

Students should have a good grasp of any operating system (DOS, Windows, etc.) with knowledge of file and directory concepts. Experience with UNIX and TCP/IP is helpful.

Module Overviews:

Module 1: Fundamentals of Unix/Linux
This module covers the core fundamentals of the Unix/Linux operating system including fundamental command line, file permissions, and basic network concepts. Students will learn skills that include: composing command-line strings, navigating the Solaris and Linux file system, manipulating text files, creating files and directories, and the basics of sed and awk.

Module 2: Shell Programming
This Shell course provides students with the knowledge to read, write, and debug shell scripts. Students will be taught how to develop simple scripts to automate frequently executed sequences of commands, and how to use conditional logic, user interaction, loops, functions and start-up scripts to enhance the productivity and effectiveness of the user and the system administrator. This unit covers the Bourne, Korn and some Bash shell scripting languages with emphasis on the Korn shell.

Module 3: System Administration Solaris/Linux
Although the course will emphasize the Solaris operating system, a comparison will be made between Solaris and other Unix operating systems such as Linux, HP-UX, FreeBSD and IRIX (sgi). Instructional topics include: the essential tasks of stand alone installation, Solaris and Linux booting and shutting down (including LILO - the Linux boot loader), Solaris and Linux file system management, backup procedures, process control, user administration, device management, configuring and troubleshooting the NFS, configuring the Network Information System (NIS) environment, disk management, and JumpStart. If time allows, installing and updating Linux.
