Program Policies English Language Requirements IIT's programs for international students are not designed for beginning students of English. Each student entering the Certificate program should have previously studied English for several years, resulting in a good command of the English language. International students are expected to comprehend all lectures and assignments. Health InsuranceAs of May 2006, each student is required to purchase student health insurance through IIT. Doctor's visits and hospital stays in the U.S. can be very expensive and it is a requirement that all students have adequate health insurance. IIT's Health insurance is billed to each student automatically upon registering for courses. The current insurance charge is $850 for one year. Rates change periodically so please check the student health website for rates for the semester you'll be attending http://www.iit.edu/%7Eshc/insurance.html Immunization RequirementsIllinois law requires that students enrolled in colleges and universities be immunized against certain communicable diseases. For that reason, students are required to submit proof of immunization to the Student Health Center. Please visit the immunization link below to download an immunization form. It must be completed by your family doctor in English in your home country and turned in when you arrive. Individuals who are not properly immunized or who do not have proof must receive the immunizations at the Student Health Center for $95 immediately after arriving at IIT. Immunizations are mandatory! Main Campus: When you arrive in Chicago, you can get to IIT's Main Campus by taking the subway (CTA) or a taxi from the airport. The CTA's website has maps and train schedules at www.yourcta.com. The train ride to IIT costs $2. Taxis are available at the lower level of each terminal. Taxis in Chicago charge a meter rate based on miles and time, typically $40 - $50 for a ride to IIT's Main Campus from O'Hare airport. Rice Campus: When you arrive in Chicago, it is best to get to Rice Campus by taking a tax from the airport. Taxis are available at the lower level of each terminal. Taxis in the Chicago area charge a meter rate based on miles and time, typically about $50 for a ride to IIT's Rice Campus from O'Hare airport. HousingMain Campus: Dorm space is limited on the IIT campus. Therefore, each student is responsible for arranging for his or her own housing if the dorms are not available. There are several apartments in the area. Students should arrange for a hotel until they are able to find adequate housing in an apartment. If dorm housing is available, then students who wish to live on campus must pay for the six months of housing before arriving in the U.S. The dorms are $950 per month for a shared room (two people per room). If a student chooses to move out of the dorm before the six-month program is over, then a one-month penalty fee will be deducted from the housing refund owed to the student. Rice Campus: At the Rice Campus in Wheaton, students are given the option of finding housing on their own or working with a local representative to provide home-stay or a shared apartment with other certificate program students. For housing information and assistance, e-mail ricehousing@iit.edu Attendance PolicyEffective June 2007, certificate students must receive a grade of 70 or higher to pass each class. In order to receive a certificate for the program, each student must pass the majority of his or her classes. Students who do not attend classes or who do not pass their classes will not receive certificates. For students to maintain F1 status, they must be enrolled and attending classes full-time. Continuation of Studies RequirementsFor students wishing to extend their certificate studies beyond the six-month program, there are new guidelines that must be followed. Students can only enroll in a new six-month program if the new program is a different major from your current program. For example, if a student is currently enrolled in the IT program, he or she cannot re-enroll in the IT program but instead must enroll in the Business program. In order for a student to enroll in a second six-month program, he or she must:
Meet with an advisor at the International Center where the student will be required to show a current bank statement to cover the following fees: tuition, housing, health insurance, U-Pass, books and miscellaneous expenses. Illinois Institute of Technology is a private, Ph.D. granting university
