Introduction to UNIX and Perl Scripting
Certificate Program


Course Description and Prerequisites:

This accelerated learning program gives students a general knowledge of the UNIX operating system environment as well as scripting in Perl. Through hands-on work within a state-of-the-art classroom, students learn UNIX fundamentals and scripting in Perl. In addition, this program serves as excellent preparation for the UNIX Systems and Networking/C++ Programming Certificate Program or the Internet Design Webmaster Certificate Program.

To be accepted into this class, students should have solid experience using a modern desktop computer system.

Course Overview:

This course is designed to give a foundation in the fundamentals of UNIX, a multi-user operating system optimized for highly available 24X7 server applications. This foundation will include basic commands and a discussion of the UNIX graphical user interface, file and directory manipulation, UNIX text editing, shell (command line) operations, electronic communications, UNIX utilities and the integration of UNIX with local area networks and the Internet. This integration will include establishing remote login and file transfer communications between two UNIX systems.

In addition, the course will give students an introduction to Perl, a scripting language for the development of Website applications. Variables, flow control, conditional testing, functions, arrays, lists and debugging techniques are discussed and used in extensive hands-on exercises to reinforce design metholologies and programming strategies. Students will be exposed to the uses of Perl as a scripting language rooted in UNIX, but whose programs are highly portable across systems and are used as a part of the Internet culture.
