Course Description and Prerequisites:

This course is designed to teach the student how to service different types of computer equipment. Through the utilization of numerous problem sets and lab exercises, the student will gain the knowledge and trouble-shooting skills needed to provide capable support in the field of personal computers. Upon completion of the course, participants will have the necessary experience needed to pass the A+ Certification Core Module Exam and the DOS/Windows Module Specialty Exam.

Good PC skills are required for enrollment.

Course Description:

Core Hardware Service Technology
Identify basic terms, concepts, and functions of system modules, including how each module should work during normal operation and during the boot process.
Identify available IRQs, DMAs and I/O addresses and procedures for device installation and configuration.
Identify proper procedures for installing and configuring IDE/EIDE, SCSI and peripheral divices.

Diagnosing and Troubleshooting
Learn basic troubleshooting procedures and how to elicit problem symptoms from customers.

Preventive Maintenance
Identify issues, procedures and devices for protection within the computing environment, including people, hardware and the surrounding workspace.

Motherboard/Processors/Memory
Identify the categories of RAM (Random Access Memory) terminology, their locations, and physical characteristics.
Identify the most popular types of motherboards, their components and their architecture (bus structures and power supplies).
Identify the purpose of CMOS, what it contains and how to change its basic parameters.

Printers
Identify basic concepts, printer operations and printer components, learn care and service techniques and common problems with primary printer types.

Basic Networking
Identify basic networking concepts, including how a network works and the ramifications of repairs on the network.
Operating System Technologies and Fundamentals.
Learn basic concepts and procedures for creating, viewing and managing files, directories and disks. This includes procedures for changing file attributes and the ramifications of those changes.

Installation, Configuration and Upgrading
Identify the procedures for installing Windows 9x and Windows 2000, including basic system boot sequences and boot methods.
Learn procedures for loading/adding and configuring application device drivers, and the necessary software for certain devices.
